Grande Prairie is located in beautiful northern Alberta, the land of long summer days and ample recreational opportunities during longer winter days. Eastlink Centre is a state of the art facility with an indoor track; an aquatic centre with two pools, a lazy river, hot tubs and surfing; equipment and many drop in fitness classes. The city has other fitness venues, Nordic ski trails, a ski hill and recreational and competitive curling leagues. Summer activities include walking/biking trails, a skateboard park, single track bicycle trails and league sports. There are many cultural, entertaining and shopping opportunities. Reporting to the Director, Addiction and Mental Health, North Zone West, the Unit Manager will be accountable for providing leadership of the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital. Although located in acute care, the inpatient psychiatry unit operates under the Addiction and Mental Health Portfolio. The incumbent will have strong collaborative skills and be responsible for building relationships with acute care and community partners. An exciting opportunity to develop an enhanced therapeutic environment on the unit that is embedded in the principles of patient and family centered care. Discharge planning that includes the patient, their family and support services in the community. The goal of this approach is to minimize readmission rates as a result of adequate community based support and empowerment of the patient through recovery based principles. The Unit Manager will support their team in planning for the move to a new facility in 2022. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Remote Retention Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $3,000. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.

Qualifications:     Required Qualifications:
At a minimum, a Baccalaureate Degree with current licenses and designations in Occupational Therapy, Social Work or other relevant area. Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with current licenses. Experience in a health care setting and provision of addiction and mental health services. Demonstration of a dedication to professional and personal development. Equivalencies in education and experience may be considered.

Progressive leadership experience in an addiction and mental health environment. Effective communication, strong organization skills and ability to influence and lead change. A commitment to quality services that are client focused. Confidence in decision making, coaching and mentoring and initiating difficult conversations. Ability to build confidence in others. Solution focused and able to sort through complex issues.


Preferred Qualifications:
Five (5) years in a related role in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity. Master’s degree.
Description:     From your thorough knowledge of Alberta Health Services’ Vision, Mission, Business Plan and Addiction and Mental Health policies and of relevant provincial legislation, you will be directly responsible for: Ensuring compliance with relevant policies, the Mental Health Act and Health Information Act. Modeling and supporting patient and family centered care. Managing rotations and staffing within a unionized environment. Providing day to day supervision of nursing, allied and clerical staff within the unit. Coordinating and providing leadership to daily operations and delivery of services. Having a basic understanding of Meditech, ePeople and eManager. Identifying training needs. Monitoring and ensuring compliance with budgetary guidelines through Attendance Awareness, monitoring overtime, rigorous monitoring of observation levels and ensuring rigorous recruitment to the casual pool. The Unit Manager will demonstrate proficiency in: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative and trusting relationships with staff and the leadership team of QEII and Addiction and Mental Health. Ability to facilitate resolution of conflict among staff or between patients and their families. Aptitude for promoting, implementing and evaluating the change process by utilizing principles of change management. Flexibility, creativity, self-motivation and organizational skills. Verbal and written communication skills. Modeling behaviors consistent with the values of AHS; compassion, accountability, respect, excellence and safety.
