The Learner Success Services (LSS) department is looking for an Indigenous Mental Health Services Liaison to complement their team.
For Indigenous learners, mental health must be viewed holistically, inclusive of spirituality, culture and social conditions and must recognize the historical and socio-political context of Indigenous mental health, including the impact of colonization; intergenerational and/or other trauma, loss and grief; separation of families and children; loss of traditional lands; loss of culture and identity; and the effect of social inequity, stigma, racism and ongoing losses. As such, mental health supports for Indigenous learners requires focused efforts.
Reporting to the Coordinator, Counselling and Wellness, the Indigenous Mental Health Services Liaison will work closely with the Mental Health Outreach Liaison and the Iniikokaan Centre team to:
Bachelor’s Degree - Social work, counselling, health promotion, nursing, psychology, public health, etc
3 years of experience in related field
An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered
Experience working in an adult or post-secondary education institution would be an asset.
In depth knowledge of various mental health issues and how they impact personal and academic success.
Recognition and respect for the diversity and uniqueness of individuals with various mental health issues.
Knowledge of communication and training strategies/techniques and the ability to design plans for Indigenous audiences.
In depth knowledge of Aboriginal history, cultures, worldviews, teachings, current issues and identity. Experience working with the Indigenous peoples of this area.
Detailed knowledge of barriers Indigenous people face in education participation.
Recognition and respect for the diversity and uniqueness of First Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples’ expectations and aspirations.
Strong connection to Indigenous Ways of Knowing.
Knowledge of cultural awareness and protocol as related to Aboriginal peoples (First Nations, Metis & Inuit) and also, experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Experience working with Aboriginal organizations, services and other resources in Calgary.
Knowledge and fluency in an Aboriginal language.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including effective presentation skills and report writing.
Problem-solving and analytical skills.
Planning, organizational and time management skills.
Ability to work under pressure and with deadlines.
Must be credible, non-judgmental and impartial.
Working knowledge of computer applications (Microsoft Office, Internet, Student Information System an asset) general office equipment and keyboarding skills.
