Indigenous Mental Health Services Liaison

Calgary   |      January 30, 2018 12:00

Bow Valley College is the largest and fastest growing Comprehensive Community College in Alberta. We have over 20 locations across southern Alberta helping 14,000 learners each year. Our mission is to contribute to the vitality of communities and strength of the economy through innovative adult education programs and services which equip students for successful living, lifelong learning, and employment in a global knowledge-based environment.

Why work at Bow Valley College?  We have recently been named one of Alberta's Top 70 Employers for 2017. Bow Valley College is made up of employees who are committed to our learners´ success, as well as each other´s. Our staff and faculty consistently say it is the people who keep them at the College, the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our students, and the incredible support they receive from their co-workers and supervisors.

The Learner Success Services (LSS) department is looking for an Indigenous Mental Health Services Liaison to complement their team.

For Indigenous learners, mental health must be viewed holistically, inclusive of spirituality, culture and social conditions and must recognize the historical and socio-political context of Indigenous mental health, including the impact of colonization; intergenerational and/or other trauma, loss and grief; separation of families and children; loss of traditional lands; loss of culture and identity; and the effect of social inequity, stigma, racism and ongoing losses.  As such, mental health supports for Indigenous learners requires focused efforts.

Reporting to the Coordinator, Counselling and Wellness, the Indigenous Mental Health Services Liaison will work closely with the Mental Health Outreach Liaison and the Iniikokaan Centre team to:

  • Develop and launch strategically identified Indigenous learner mental health programs and initiatives grounded in an Indigenous, holistic, perspective;
  • Liaise with Indigenous community stakeholders and support relevant agencies to enhance on-campus mental health supports for Indigenous learners and facilitate connections to broader resources within the community.
