Unarmed Verses depicts a Toronto youth’s experiences with displacement in relation to revitalization and
urbanization projects. This workshop will feature a moderated panel discussion with professionals that have
experiences in working with inner city populations. Themes that participants will discuss include: displacement
in relation to the Ice District projects in Edmonton, poverty, social work practice implications, and more.
The film run time is 1 hour and 25 minutes. After the film, there will be a short intermission followed by
discussion.

Learning objectives:

- Develop a deeper understanding of complexities and nuances of working within the inner city.
- Critically reflect through dialogue on personal social work practice approaches when working with inner city populations.
- Develop an understanding of the implications of revitalization/urbanization projects in relation to macro/micro social work practice.
- Develop practice strategies when working with inner city populations.

Peter Smyth, MSW, RSW
 

Peter Smyth oversees the High Risk Youth Initiative with Edmonton & Area Child & Family Services Region.

Ken Armstrong
 

Ken Armstrong is the Oskapewis/Indigenous Cultural and Educational Helper at Homeward Trust Edmonton.
He has worked with Edmonton’s homeless and Indigenous communities in various capacities, including street
outreach, since 2003.

Attendance Requirements:  

In order to receive the 3 Category A credits participants must attend the entire workshop.
Partial credits will not be provided.

Fees (Include a light snack):

$25 for RSW and ACSW members

$15 for ACSW student members

$20 for other social work students

$50 for all other participants
