 The Northern Alberta Gerontological Social Work Interest Group are pleased to present
"Changing How We Think About Older Adults Experiencing Addiction" 

The increasing number of older adults experiencing addiction is resulting in new challenges for health care professionals. In this workshop the presenters will explore alternative models of addiction, relevant research, trauma informed practice and the complexities of addictions in older adults. These points will be demonstrated using examples of individuals that the presenters have supported. Audience members will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive activities throughout the presentation.

Workshop objectives to explore:

  • Different models of addiction
  • Complexities of addiction in older adults
  • Ways healthcare staff can support older adults with addictions
  • The power of language when supporting older adults with addiction issues

Presenters: 

Carmen Lang, R.Psych

Carmen Lang R. Psych graduated with a major of counselling from City University of Seattle in 2014. She began working with Community Geriatric Psychiatry in 2014 as an Addictions Counsellor. Currently, she is employed as a Psychologist for Community Geriatric Psychiatry.

Megan Stanley, BSW, RSW

Megan Stanley BSW, RSW studied addictions counselling for two years prior to transferring to social work. While in social work she completed her practicums with a focus on mental health and addictions. During one placement she worked at Boyle Street with their needle exchange program and mental health unit. Her other placement was in a residential and non-residential outpatient program in Australia. She is employed at the Addictions Recovery Centre in Edmonton and the Community Geriatric Psychiatry as an addiction counsellor.

Attendance Requirements:  

In order to receive the 3 Category A credits participants must attend for the entire workshop.
Partial credits will not be provided.

Fees (Include Buffet Supper):

$45 for RSW and ACSW members

$35 for ACSW student members

$40 for other social work students

$70 for all other participants

Please be sure to indicate any dietary concerns.

A buffet style supper will be provided. This will include soup, salad, sandwiches, fruit & veggies and a dessert buffet.
