This year, the Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone Social Work Professional Practice Council and the University of Calgary-Faculty of Social Work (UofC-FSW) is pleased to be sponsoring a two day conference with Dr. Christine Courtois - a Board Certified Counseling Psychologist and expert in the area of complex trauma. The presenter will articulate core principles and best practices of treating complex co-occurring trauma. This presentation will be based on the full range of evidence-based informed models of treatment, complex clinical scenarios, and innovations in working with various types of adaptations to complex trauma across the lifespan. Practical information and specific approaches that attendees can immediately use will be provided. Discussion and case examples of identifying, handling, and preventing crises and threats to patient safety or to the therapeutic alliance will be facilitated. This will include addressing patients who present with complicated characterological, suicidal, substance abuse, aggression, and self-harm problems. Learning Objectives: define complex trauma and identify several types; describe common initial and longer-term after effects associated with complex trauma; describe core principles of treatment and the critical significance of the treatment relationship; describe the recommended treatment sequence of interventions and its practical application; identify several types of useful interventions by stage of treatment and by gender and age or developmental stage of client, with emphasis on common characteristics; and identify common challenges, risks, and rewards for clinicians in treating complex trauma.
